Barcelona Churches, Santa Maria del Pi Church

Located in the small Plaça del Pi (pine tree square), this medieval church has one of the most impressive stained glass rose windows in Barcelona measuring an amazing ten metres in diameter and often claimed to be the largest in the world.

The square is full of little shops and once every fortnight it hosts a weekend market where you can buy excellent handmade products such as honey, chocolate, jam, bakery and many other foods, all locally produced or from the region.

The Gothic-style Santa Maria del Pi church was built during the XIV century, burnt down in 1936 and restored in the 1960s. Nowadays the treasury of this basilica housing important religious pieces crafted out of gold is open to visitors.

Every weekend the pretty Sant Josep Oriol square located right next to the church hosts an open air artists’ market where you can really see how the beauty of the sea and city has inspired local painters. At other times buskers and street performers entertain visitors sitting at the café terraces.

The Santa Maria del Pi is one of the most beautiful medieval churches in Barcelona, together with Santa Maria del Mar, the Cathedral of Barcelona, Sant Pere de Puel.les, Sant Pau del Camp and the cloister of Pedralbes.
