Description
Start your visit by entering through the external doors of Pieta and Saint Eulalia to reach the Cathedral's cloister. Proceed through the Romanesque white marble interior door decorated with geometric patterns and a Gothic pediment.
Wander the cloister’s four galleries featuring ogive arches supported by sculpted pillars that depict scenes from the Old Testament. Notice the keystones illustrating New Testament scenes and the Holy Cross motif.
Explore the chapels along the galleries, each originally dedicated to different patron saints or guilds and protected by local families. In the cloister garden, observe palm trees, magnolias, an orange tree, and a central fountain. The garden is also home to the well-known annual “ou com balla” (dancing egg) celebration on Corpus Christi.
Visit the cloister’s pond where 13 white geese reside, a traditional symbol of the Cathedral. Then take the elevator from the chapel of the Innocent Saints to the rooftop, adjacent to the San Ivo door. From here, see the Cathedral’s bell towers, pinnacles, the cimborio with the Holy Cross, cloister, and views across Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter.
After the rooftop, explore the Chapter Hall museum located under the cloister gallery near Saint Lucia’s chapel. This space was once a soup kitchen for the poor. Inside, view the 11th-century lobed baptism font from the original Romanesque temple and a terracotta statue of Saint Eulalia by Giuliano di Nofri.
