Description
Depart from your hotel in Barcelona for a one-hour journey to the Montserrat region. Upon arrival, explore Montserrat Monastery, founded in the 11th century and home to the Virgin of Montserrat, known as 'La Moreneta' (the Black Madonna). Situated 720 meters above sea level, the site offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.
Visit the monastery's Basilica, which features a 12-meter-high organ with over 4,200 pipes and combines Gothic, Renaissance, and Catalan architectural styles. Then, explore the Museo de Montserrat, showcasing works by El Greco, Miró, Dalí, Tàpies, Picasso, and others, along with archaeological artifacts from Egypt and Mesopotamia.
After lunch with valley views, proceed to Cardona Castle. Here, explore the modern fortress and parts of the old Count's Castle, including the Torre de la Minyona and the Collegiate Church of San Vicente, an example of Catalan-Lombard Romanesque architecture. The castle is one of Spain’s best-preserved medieval complexes and is historically notable for its defense during the War of the Spanish Succession in 1714 and Napoleon’s attacks.
Next, visit the historic Salt Mountain Mine, with a 1,000-year history, now part of the Salt Mountain Cultural Park. The tour starts in the open-air museum at the former 'María Teresa' extraction shaft, where you learn about the industrial history of the valley. A guided tour inside the mine explores the galleries with their colored salt layers and veins before returning to Barcelona.
