Description
Depart from central Barcelona on an air-conditioned coach, and after approximately one hour on the highway, board the cog-wheel train ascending Montserrat mountain. The mountain’s unique serrated shape inspired its Catalan name, combining “Mont” (mountain) and “Serrat” (serrated). Montserrat’s protected status as a National Park since 1987 preserves its remarkable natural and cultural heritage.
Your local guide will explain the monastery’s history and architectural details during your walk through the site, where around 80 Benedictine monks currently reside. The basilica features Gothic and Renaissance elements and houses the revered Black Madonna statue, known locally as La Moreneta. This wooden carving, darkened by varnish over centuries, is displayed in the monastery church and linked to the legend of a miraculous apparition in Santa Cova cave.
The tour includes a tasting session of typical regional liqueurs and access to the audiovisual exhibit “Espai Audio Visual Montserrat.” After the guided part, you have free time to visit the basilica independently, view La Moreneta, appreciate the surrounding landscape, and explore the local market selling agricultural and regional products.
Optionally, you can upgrade your experience to include entrance to the Escolanía de Montserrat, one of Europe’s oldest boys’ choirs, or access a video-mapping show celebrating Montserrat’s millennium through immersive art, light, and music presentations.
