Explore the Sant Pau Recinte Modernista, Barcelona’s largest Art Nouveau complex, ideal for architecture and history enthusiasts.
Sant Pau Recinte Modernista, designed by architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner between 1905 and 1930, was originally built as a garden city hospital. It served as a public hospital for a century before being restored to showcase Art Nouveau architecture and advanced health and hygiene concepts.
Located outside Barcelona’s El Raval neighborhood, it replaced the old Hospital de la Santa Creu, offering a modern facility combined with charitable welfare ideals. Today, the complex hosts international organizations such as the European Forest Institute, Casa Àsia, the Global University Network for Innovation, and the United Nations University Institute on Globalization, Culture, and Mobility.
Visitors can explore the beautifully renovated pavilions connected by underground passages. The site features a wide array of sculptures, stained glass, mosaics, and detailed Modernista motifs within extensive gardens.
