Casa Batlló
Barcelona
One of Antoní Gaudí's most well-known works and a symbol of Modernism is the Casa Batlló, completed in 1906. This famous building, an architectural gem which adorns the centrally-located and elegant Passeig de Gràcia in L'Eixample district, has become one of the city's most emblematic and visited attractions.
The original building served as a residential property and was owned by Josep Batlló who, between 1904 and 1906, assigned Gaudí to undertake a complete renovation of the building with astonishing results. Gaudí added the striking balconies and fantastic, vast, street facing windows which allow for better distribution of natural light, a feature which became synonymous with his designs. The stunning modernist façade conceals a whole world of artistic and architectural surprises.
Rather than being just a building, Casa Batlló is a myth of art, architecture and design of all times. Casa Batlló seduces for its extreme design, its repertoire of visual solutions, the creative use of materials and colour and the allegorical values. It represents the fantastic, the theatrical and the vibrant. It is the expression of conceptual freedom and an unusual form of perfection. Especially remarkable is the creative use of a variety of materials: wood, glass, iron, ceramics and stone.
Not surprisingly Casa Batlló was inscribed on Unesco's World Heritage List in July 2005.
