Description
From the Middle Ages to the present day, beliefs about possessions and exorcisms have been part of Barcelona's religious and cultural history. On this tour, you'll learn how these phenomena were interpreted at different times and what their impact was on society.
The tour includes old convents, churches, and other spaces related to documented episodes between the 17th and 18th centuries. Based on historical sources, inquisitorial documents, religious chronicles, and testimonies from the period, it explains how exorcism rituals were carried out, who participated in them, and the social, religious, and medical context in which they took place.
The itinerary also addresses the evolution of these beliefs during the 20th century and analyzes the presence of religious and spiritual practices linked to these phenomena at different times in recent history.
In addition, the route offers a current view of the practice of exorcism within the Catholic Church, the role of officially designated exorcists, and the evolution of scientific and medical understanding of phenomena that were once attributed to possession. Different historical, religious, cultural, and psychological perspectives are also presented to help us understand how these interpretations have changed over time.
This tour offers a rigorous approach to a little-known aspect of Barcelona's historical and religious heritage, providing context and analysis to understand beliefs and practices that were part of society in different eras.
