Description
Tapas in Barcelona work a little differently from what most visitors expect. People rarely spend the whole evening in one place; they stop at a bar for a drink and a couple of plates to share, then move on to the next one. This tour follows the same rhythm through two neighbourhoods on either side of the line where the old city walls once stood: Raval, in the old town, and Sant Antoni, where the Eixample begins.
Your guide is a French musician and traveller who lives in Barcelona, so the whole evening runs in French, at the pace your group wants. Nobody else joins you, which means you can linger where you are enjoying yourselves and ask whatever you want along the way.
We start at a casa de menjars, which is what Catalans call a simple everyday eatery, then continue to a neighbourhood bar, an old bodega and finally a xurreria for churros. At one of the stops you'll drink wine from a porró, the Catalan glass jug with a long spout that gets passed around the table. Between the bars we walk through the Sant Antoni market, the first in Barcelona built outside the walls, next to where the Sant Antoni gate once stood. It reopened in 2018 after nine years of work that took longer than planned once remains of the wall turned up underneath.
Tapas and a drink are included at each bar, so there is nothing to order or pay along the way. Your guide brings to the table what each place is known for and tells you what you're eating and why it's made that way here.
By the end of the evening, you'll know what to order on your own, and you'll leave with a short list of places for the rest of your stay.
