Barcelona Churches, Basilica of La Sagrada Família

This world famous and iconic Basilica is still being constructed more than hundred years after the first stone was put in place in 1882. It is dubbed "The Cathedral of the Twentieth Century" and the sheer brilliance of its design will indicate why in just one glimpse.
Recognised as Antoni Gaudí’s finest achievement, La Sagrada Familía’s spires dominate the skyline in Barcelona and is Barcelona’s number one tourist attraction, pulling in millions of new visitors each year.

It is expected to be finished in 2026 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of Gaudí, who was hit by a tram at the age of 74. This genius left his creative mark that can be admired in a huge number of unique master pieces in the city of Barcelona.

The Nativity façade was declared world cultural heritage by the UNESCO in 2005. The Passion façade, the bronze doors, the windows and the cloister shouldn’t be missed, not to mention the Faith, Hope and Charity porticos and the spires. The uniquely decorated interior that looks like a forest with high columns and full of geometric forms is also sure to take your breath away.

The stunning yet controversial designs, coupled with its museum and tours make it one of the places you simply cannot miss during your visit to Barcelona. For the religious, it is a building to make pilgrimage to and for those who appreciate grand designs… get your camera ready!

The Sagrada Família is full of symbols and with the help of an audio guide you will discover many of its secrets.

We highly recommend taking the elevator not only to admire the Basilica, but also the stunning views over the city of Barcelona, although if you are feeling energetic you can take the narrow and twisting 400-step climb to the top.
