Barcelona Churches

Antoni Gaudí's impressive La Sagrada Familía basilica is the crown of Barcelona's most famous religious landmarks, yet there are also many other fabulous religious buildings showcasing Barcelona’s history. Amongst the many Catholic churches in Barcelona fine examples can be found of Romanesque, Gothic or Baroque architecture.

The impressive beauty of the medieval churches in Barcelona is evident in the city’s Cathedral, the Santa Maria del Pi church, the Pedralbes cloister and also Sant Pau del Camp, Sant Pere de Puel.les and Santa Maria del Mar churches.

As in the rest of Catalonia and Spain, Barcelona has no official religion, but because of its deep-rooted tradition most of the population is Catholic.

However, Barcelona also houses other representative buildings of different religions such as the Major Synagogue located in the Marlet street, number 5 in the heart of the old city district. The city also has several Muslim temples and a beautiful Buddhist temple called Palau Novella in the heart of the Garraf region, home to Catalonia's first Buddhist monastery.

When entering any religious building common sense is required in terms of behaviour and dress. Many people are there to pray or contemplate in silence and this should be respected.

Most churches in Barcelona are accessible to people with reduced mobility. Each building exhibits its own style and heritage and here you will find a few examples which should not be overlooked when planning your itinerary.
